Explanations in French, not just corrections

A red underline tells you something is wrong. It does not tell you why, and next week you make the same mistake. Click any WriteNative underline and the card explains the reason in French: a tense that does not match, a preposition carried over from French, a word that looks the same in both languages but means something else.

Each suggested word comes with its meaning in this sentence in French ("eventually" → finalement) and its pronunciation, so you learn the word while you fix it.

Write in French, send English

Press ⌥ twice with nothing selected and write what you mean in French. The English appears as you type, written the way a colleague would say it rather than word for word, and goes in at your cursor in Slack, Mail, Notion or the browser.

The mistakes French speakers make in English

Most of them come from French itself, which is why an explanation in French helps more than a label in English. A few that come up again and again:

When WriteNative flags one of these, the card says in French what the English word really means and which one you were looking for, so the next time you catch it yourself.

  • False friends: "eventually" means finally, not éventuellement; "actually" means in fact, not actuellement; "to assist" is to help, not to attend.
  • Tenses: "I have seen him yesterday" should be "I saw him yesterday"; "I work here since 2020" should be "I have worked here since 2020".
  • Uncountable nouns: "informations" and "advices" have no plural in English.
  • Constructions carried over: "I am agree" for "I agree", "I have 30 years" for "I am 30".

Questions

Is the app in French?
Yes. The Mac app and this website are in French, along with eight other languages, and the explanations follow the app's language.
Does Grammarly work for French speakers?
Grammarly now gives suggestions for French text too, but the explanations of its English suggestions stay short labels in English. WriteNative explains English suggestions in French and translates what you write in French into English.
Is it free?
Spelling and automatic typo fixes are free without an account; a free account adds 30 paragraph checks and 5 rewrites or translations a day. Pro is unlimited and starts with a 7-day free trial.
Is my text stored?
No. Cloud checks send only the paragraph you just finished, and nothing is kept or used for training. With the On-device plan your text never leaves your Mac.
