Grammar checking for Apple Mail, before you press Send.
Apple Mail has no grammar checker beyond the system speller. WriteNative adds one in the message you are writing: mistakes underlined, explained in your language, and fixed in one click.
How it works in Mail
WriteNative is a Mac app. It reads the message you are composing through macOS Accessibility and draws its underlines on top, so there is no plug-in, no Mail bundle and nothing that breaks with a macOS update.
- Spelling, grammar and punctuation mistakes underlined as you write.
- Click an underline for the fix and the reason, in your language.
- "Fix all" corrects every mistake in a sentence at once.
- The WriteNative button in the corner shows the number of suggestions and the tone of the email.
Make an email sound right
Select a paragraph and press ⌥ twice: Improve, Shorter, Formal, Friendly or Confident. Your writing style adapts to the app, so suggestions in Mail lean formal while chat apps stay casual.
Write the email in your language first
If English is your second language, the hardest part is often the first sentence. Press ⌥ twice with nothing selected, write what you want to say in your language, and natural English is inserted where your cursor is.
Good to know
In Mail, fixes go in when you click them rather than as you type. Mail's own spelling underlines and WriteNative's can both show; turn off "Check spelling while typing" in Mail's Edit menu if you prefer one set.
Questions
- Does Apple Mail have a grammar checker?
- Mail can check spelling and grammar from the Edit menu, but it only marks mistakes and does not explain them. WriteNative checks as you write and explains each suggestion.
- Does it work with Gmail, Outlook.com or iCloud accounts in Mail?
- Yes. It works on the compose window, whatever account the email is sent from.
- Are my emails stored?
- No. Only the paragraph being checked is sent, and nothing is kept or used for training. With the On-device plan nothing leaves your Mac.
